Mt Buffalo & Mt Beauty
< Previous Entry
This series of images came from a short few days in the mountains, not far from home in Victoria, Australia. With little time on my hands I decided to revisit familiar locations, mainly just to stretch my legs and enjoy some peaceful walks. Of course I took all the heavy camera gear along, figuring if nothing else it would serve to give me some much needed exercise. Ordinarily I derive inspiration from travelling to new places and exploring nature. In landscape photography it is common to work hard for days with little to show for it, so I was not expecting to come away with many keepers. However as it turned out almost the opposite occurred, with old familiar subjects and light both delivering the goods seemingly wherever I ventured.
First up was the impressive gorge at Mount Buffalo. The experience of standing atop such a grand vista, particularly first thing in the morning as the sun crests the horizon, is something genuinely absorbing, almost overwhelming. From the many lookouts, the land falls away in dramatic granite cliffs that plunge around 300 metres into the valley below, creating a sense of scale that never seems to diminish no matter how many times I return.
On this occasion I had driven up for dawn. Wandering around in the dark, I had to be careful of rocks slick with ice, catching myself a couple of times with the big tripod. Eventually I settled on a position and set up my gear to wait, only to be treated to an amazing cloud inversion. The morning sun beamed golden light across the tops of the clouds filling the vast valley below, transforming the landscape into a sea of glowing white stretching to the horizon. With the sheer walls of the gorge emerging above the cloud deck and the first warm light touching the surrounding cliffs, it felt as though I was looking out over an entirely different world. What a great start to the trip.
I returned the next morning to shoot the same scene, but from a different lookout. This time dawn delivered a lovely mixture of cool and warm tones, with pops of red and magenta, whilst fog lingered in the valley. The scene was very still. Not a breath of wind rustled the leaves of the gum trees clinging to life above the void. Only the sound of distant falling water echoed its lonely song, accompanied by the occasional bird call.
While at Mount Buffalo I spent several hours walking up and down Eurobin Creek, convinced an image could be made. Unfortunately I just could not find anything compelling and ended up at Ladies Bath Falls. Despite having shot here dozens of times, I could not resist capturing the strong water flow, and lush greens of the ferns. Such a cracker of spot, it is very hard to make a poor image.
Driving to Mount Beauty I did have something of a plan, and managed to capture the pondage at sunset, looking wonderfully serene, going for the most obvious composition, straight across the water. The clouds were dark and moody, but at the last moment the sun found its way through delivering some lovely orange highlights.
The next day I explored the Kiewa River which is a picturesque alpine stream that flows down from the snowfields of Falls Creek before winding its way past the township of Mount Beauty. Its crystal-clear water and shady riverbanks attract plenty of walkers keen to experience the trail leading upstream towards The Gorge, where the river narrows dramatically between rocky outcrops.
This trek involves at least four river crossings. From prior experiences here, I decided to wear gumboots making it possible to keep my socks dry, but most walkers simply accept the inevitable and plunge through boots and all. At the gorge itself, I discovered once again that further progress is only possible by swimming. Somehow I had already known this, but forgotten so was quite unprepared to brave the icy water and risk getting gear wet. Someday I will return, possibly with a wetsuit, dry bags and an inflatable to ferry my camera gear so I can explore deeper upstream.
On the way out, one section of the river caught my eye because of its almost impossibly lush green hues. I loved the way the water reflected the surrounding vegetation, creating such vibrant colour throughout the scene. Fortunately, capturing this image did not require becoming submerged myself.
Running out of days, I decided to head to the coast, but was foiled by gloomy drizzle that made those big ocean views appear somewhat drab. As usual rain made me think of waterfalls, so I slipped over to the ever popular Hopetoun Falls in the Otways, arriving just ahead of the dawn in order to have the place to myself. The water volume was looking very impressive, and the lush greens, all damp from the rain appeared deeply saturated with colour, particularly after popping on a polarizer. A bit of fog drifted through, making the whole scene look amazing. I spent two or three hours making sure to capture the best of it.
After that it was just the drive home, and the dreaded unpacking and cleaning of gear. However before long it was all sorted and I was once again surrounded by the familiar comforts of home and family. Writing this some weeks later, with work and its associated stresses once again piled up, I was thinking another trip was on the cards. Where to, I hear you ask? Well the next adventure involved our young lad and I heading far north, all the way to the Queensland border, but you will have to wait for the next blog to hear about that. So until then, thank you for reading, may Mother Nature find you, and grant your life some much needed peace.
