Lincolns Rock lookout, in the ever amazing Blue Mountains west of Sydney, is exceedingly popular. With big sweeping views across the Jamison Valley and a giant flat, white rock upon which to stand, it is a grand platform. However, when I say popular I mean, crazily so, to the point of regular bus loads of tourists and wedding parties swarming over the rocks and literally queuing up to have the exact same photo taken, legs dangling dangerously over the unguarded abyss.

Previously called Flat Rock, the lookout is now named after the late Lincoln Hall, an Australian mountaineer who was left for dead on Mount Everest in 2006, but miraculously survived the night at 8,700m. Sitting on Kings Tableland plateau, access is pretty easy from Wentworth Falls township, though you will encounter dirt roads. At the time of writing there are also no facilities other than a small carpark which fills up fast. A short walk takes you to the lookout, just follow the crowds. I would not advise a visit with young children, mainly due to the volume of people milling around the cliff edge and potential for high winds.

Having scouted this location, and visited a few times I was well aware of the challenge faced by a landscape photographer hoping for a people free image. With limited time on our hands, however, we decided to try another sunset here. The weather had been sunny most of the day, so our expectations were low as we roamed back and forth trying to park ourselves somewhere that offered a composition inclusive of the valley and cliff, but free of humans.

Incredibly luck was on our side. A mixture of low and high cloud draped the horizon line, and after waiting an hour or so, the sun blazed through, spot lighting just the central valley below, so neatly it looked like colour had been poured into it. The moment lasted only a minute or two, but that was enough. A couple of hundred people were just right of this frame, inches out of shot, so I count myself quite lucky indeed to have captured this scene with the foreground cliff in view.

What shipping or freight charges apply?
Shipping charges apply with both printers and vary depending on the size of the prints and destination. The freight fee will be shown during your check out process. As a rough estimate, using the Australian printer (Red Bubble), a small print sent to Australia might incur shipping of only $5, while a large framed print might be $20 or more. The US Printer (Smugmug) charges more to ship to Australia, with fees going over $45 US for some larger items.
