Mountain Huts & More

< Previous Entry Next Entry >
At the tail end of autumn, heading into a cold winter I had some time to explore and set about hatching a plan. Having visited Kennedys Hut a few times before I now knew that I needed to take some serious steps to avoid people if I was to ever get the scene to myself, so I based my trip around some discouragingly cold and wet weather and a non-weekend day. Fortunately it paid off and there wasn't a soul around. No-one at all. In fact it was a little creepy arriving in the dark ahead of the dawn. On previous trips there had been so many campers, kids and cars that they occupied every square inch. Now it was just me and the gurgling river, a few birds calls and the occasional creak of tall trees in the darkness. Finally the dawn arrived and with it my confidence. Oh, I love that colourful light. The scene looked like something out of painting. Suddenly I was smiling from ear to ear.

From Omeo I headed over the range and down to Myrtleford where I found my favourite tree back lit with golden light filtered through yellow leaves. I spent so long working out an angle that gave it a pleasing aspect, and shooting it over and over until I'd avoided all lens flare that I subsequently ran out of time to make my next intended location. Somehow the tree wanted me to slow down and stay a while so I did and was rewarded for it.

On to Kosciuszko where I spent a few days revisiting Coolamine Homestead and surrounds. The last time I was here the wild horses freaked me out. Alone in the predawn murk, fog all around and the stamping stallion declaring his dominion over the valley, it was a little hair raising. This time was more peaceful. I heard the horses but they were a long way off.

Each dawn and sunset was worth shooting, though I picked out the best of them for inclusion here. One dawn was particularly frosty, almost devoid of colour so complete was the dusting of white. Conversely one sunset was ablaze with colour, lighting up the sky with great whorls of texture and flame. I counted myself very lucky to have had the place to myself for the whole time. Resting and reading during the day times, combined with a little exploration of some of the other nearby huts, it was a wonderful time both photographically and personally.

Coming home I detoured a little further north to shoot Gundagai's trestle bridges, finding the grass a brilliant green in the setting sun. I'd been promising myself I'd actually stop in this town one day rather than driving through and was very glad I did. South again I paid another visit to Clifton Springs. The old pier had become something of a familiar place at the tail end of one trip or another being a good place to rest prior to the final leg home. I decided that the light whilst not dramatic was rather pleasing and came away with a nice moody shot.

So were to next? Given there is now reports of good snow about I'm hoping for an alpine trip, but not sure yet when or where. Thanks all for your encouragement and support.
