Cross Cut Saw, Mt Howitt, Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia
Cross Cut Saw BACK ZOOM
Mt Howitt, Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia

The first time I hiked Mt Howitt, some 30 years ago, I was a young lad struggling to keep up with my long legged father, but enjoying every minute of it. Having approached from the north across several peaks, and long since run out of water, darkness found us before we could make Vallejo Gantner Hut and its little stream. We built a dry camp, not far from where this shot was taken, and ate anything we had with liquid in it. In the morning, of course, we found the hut only 10 minutes further on!

Fast forward to the present day, and here I was again, only this time in winter. Having approached from the south the walk was much easier. I trekked up in the dark ahead of the dawn, and then spent the most amazing day, at the spot pictured here, simply waiting for the sun to set.

Most parents working full time are lucky to have a few minutes to themselves in a week. Here I was with an entire day. I read my book, caught up on sleep, but mostly just lay there admiring the view and my good fortune, all alone on the mountain.

From time to time clouds would cover everything reducing visibility to zero, but when the sun sank golden light blazed into my lens and the whole vista opened up right on cue.
