Coolamine Homestead rests in a quiet, perhaps even magical little vale, high on an alpine plateau in the far northern end of Kosciusko National Park. It’s a peaceful place. Caught here, just as the reflected dawn light cast a pink ting across the sky and brushed the small collection of aged huts in a pale gold, the scene portraits a timelessness and beauty. Had a stockman rode up with his dogs and a curl of smoke drifted from the chimney I would not have been surprised.
Upon this morn of the several I spent there the valley filled with a heavy fog that encroached quite suddenly like ghostly hands clasping the huts in a concealing murk mere moments after the sun arose. It left me, at best, 5 minutes in which to obtain this photograph before the buildings were veiled in white. Fortunately I’d preplanned all my compositions in the days preceding and had only to stand and wait, triggering the shutter as the moment arose.
The valley below echoes at this time with the occasional whinny of wild horses in the mist. Brown and chestnut in colour, long of mane, they strike a proud stance with great displays of sudden rapidity declaring to all they own the land more than any man. Approaching slowly, my legs sodden with dew, the heavy tripod over one shoulder, I ventured into the watery gloom in their direction realizing I carried only short lenses and had not a hope of photographing them. The noble stallion caught my scent far too soon and quickly moved his herd away, returning to pawn the ground and snort his disgust at my presence – a challenge I wisely chose to avoid.
