On the second day of a hiking trip through the spectacular Grampians National Park in the west of Victoria I had the time to summit one more peak just before the sun went down. I was hesitant. My legs were pretty shattered from the “peak bagging” I’d already done and the November temps were hovering around 40 degrees (unusual for that time of year).
I sat in the shade and rehydrated, contemplating my options and rereading the guide. The words “steep” and “arduous” taunted me. “One last effort” I said to myself, and shouldered my heavy camera gear, setting off up the track. Topping out onto the ridge I was rewarded with amazing views across to Sentinel Peak. I set up the camera and proceeded to wait a few hours, firing off the occasional frame.
Long story short, the endeavor paid off. In fact I was so taken by the views I slept in the car and headed back up the mountain again at 3am to just in case the light improved the scene at dawn. I need not have bothered. The twilight was perfect, yielding just the right subtle mauve shades though the clouds combined with hints of the dying golden sunlight touching the tops of the trees. An exciting find.
