The Bronte Beach Baths are one of a series of sea filled baths that face directly onto the ocean and are dotted along Sydney’s coastal suburbs. After visiting several I decided that Bronte’s would offer the best composition and made sure I was onsite for every sunset and dawn during a recent trip to the area.
For a country driver to be steering an unfamiliar car down very unfamiliar big city roads in the wee small hours of the morn made for a few wrong turns. However I did get to experience that magical time of the morning when everything is still except for the waves.
The vast sprawling metropolis that is Sydney and it’s surrounds seemed somehow disconnected from the scene at dawn. That is until the crazy folk came out, swimming in freezing winter temps, cutting laps of the little pool before breakfast, while surfers (more sensibly wearing wetsuits) braved the waves crashing over the rocks.
When I reviewed the many frames I’d taken it surprised me that those shot during one late evening, when a storm had just begun to brew, were the most exciting, and the most connected to life of the place. Unusual for me, I chose a scene containing people (the one shown here), young surfers preparing to leap from the rocks into the sea despite the approaching storm. For me, it best portrayed the way the populace seemed to vigorously embrace their seaside living.
